What Does the Category A Motorcycle Driving Exam Look Like?
In order to ride a single-track vehicle – a motorcycle, one must obtain a Category A driving licence. For this purpose, it is necessary to complete appropriate training and pass a state examination. Admitted to it are persons aged 24 and older, and in the case of holding a Category A2 driving licence for at least two years – from the age of 20. What does the examination itself look like?
Theoretical Examination
The first stage of the Category A driving licence examination is the theoretical part, which verifies the candidate’s knowledge in the field of road traffic safety regulations, hazards associated with it, driver duties, and conduct in emergency situations. The theoretical driving test is conducted electronically, on a computer, at the examination centre. It encompasses 20 questions on basic knowledge and 12 questions on specialized knowledge. The examination lasts 25 minutes and allows for scoring up to 74 points. 68 points are sufficient to pass it successfully. To prepare for this exam, it is worth equipping oneself with Category A test questions.
Practical Examination
The practical part of the motorcycle driving examination consists of two sections – maneuvers on the yard at the examination center and riding in road traffic. On the maneuvering yard, the examined person must perform several tasks:
- check the technical condition of the vehicle,
- perform riding along arcs shaped like a figure eight,
- perform slow and fast slaloms,
- execute an obstacle avoidance maneuver,
- start forward on an incline.
The last task is emergency braking, but it is not necessarily carried out on the maneuvering yard. The examiner may decide to order the person taking the Category A driving exam to perform emergency braking in road traffic. After successfully passing all tasks on the maneuvering yard, the time comes to head out into the city. The minimum duration of the practical exam in road traffic is 25 minutes. The examinee mounts the examination vehicle, while the examiner follows behind in a car. Communication between them takes place essentially via two-way radio. If everything goes well, the examinee receives a sheet from the examiner confirming the passing of the practical part of the Category A driving licence examination.
