The Category B driving licence practical exam is the final test of your driving competence before you are granted legal driving privileges. Its purpose is to assess whether you can operate a vehicle independently, safely, and in compliance with traffic regulations, while reacting correctly to real-world road traffic situations.
The examination currently consists of two fundamental stages:
tasks performed on the manoeuvring yard (plac manewrowy)
and
driving in road traffic (jazda w ruchu drogowym).
During the exam, the examiner evaluates more than just technical manoeuvres. Particular attention is paid to visual scanning, behaviour towards other road users, hazard perception, compliance with road signs and speed limits, and eco-driving technique.
When can you take the practical exam?
You can take the practical exam after completing your mandatory driving training and passing the state theoretical exam (where required for the category).
For Category B, this means you must have completed the required practical training at an OSK and passed the state theoretical exam.
Upon finishing training and passing the internal exam, your OSK updates your Driver Candidate Profile (PKK) in the electronic system, which unlocks practical exam registration.
How to register for the practical exam?
Once eligible, you can choose any WORD centre where you wish to take the exam.
Just like with the theoretical exam, you are not bound to the centre closest to your home or driving school.
Registration requires your Driver Candidate Profile (PKK). You must pay the official practical examination fee and select an available appointment slot.
Registration can be completed in person at WORD or online through https://info-kierowca.pl/.
What to bring to the practical exam?
First and foremost, bring a valid identity document.
If your medical certificate mandates specific corrective equipment while driving — such as glasses, contact lenses, or a hearing aid — you must wear or bring them to the exam. WORD examiners strictly verify candidate identities and check compliance with health restriction codes (e.g. code 01.06) prior to starting the practical assessment.
Arrive at the centre well in advance. Arriving late may forfeit your exam slot.
What does the Category B practical exam look like?
The examination follows a structured five-stage progression.
First, the examiner confirms your identity and outlines exam rules. Next, you perform the vehicle safety checks and pre-drive cockpit adjustments.
The next phase comprises the manoeuvring yard exercises.
Upon passing yard tasks, you exit onto public roads for the main driving evaluation. At the end of the route, the examiner delivers the result and reviews your performance. This 5-stage framework is standard across WORD centres.
Is the manoeuvring yard still mandatory in 2026?
Yes.
As of September 2026, the manoeuvring yard remains a mandatory component of the state Category B practical exam in Poland.
The Ministry of Infrastructure has proposed a reform to eliminate the mandatory yard exam for categories B and B1, moving more of the assessment directly to urban traffic.
However, this is currently a legislative proposal and not yet enacted law. The bill remains in parliamentary processing.
Therefore, anyone currently taking a Category B exam must prepare for manoeuvring yard exercises.
How does the exam begin?
After verifying documents, the examiner introduces themselves and initiates the exam procedure.
The first practical task is inspecting basic safety-related vehicle components.
The computer system randomly draws two inspection items for you.
One item is selected from the fluid and horn group: engine oil level, coolant level, brake fluid level, windscreen washer fluid, or horn operation.
The second item is drawn from the vehicle lighting group: sidelights/parking lights, dipped headlights, main beam (high beam), direction indicators, hazard warning lights, reversing light, brake lights (STOP), or fog lights.
You have a maximum of 5 minutes to complete this task.
Do you need to know the exact fluid level of everything?
You must know primarily where and how each fluid reservoir or parameter is checked.
Regulations specify that the candidate must at least point out the location and instruments or indicators used to verify fluid levels (e.g., locating the dipstick, min/max marks on expansion tanks).
Do not just memorize names: be prepared to locate the components under the bonnet and explain the inspection procedure clearly.
How to prepare the car cockpit for driving?
Following vehicle inspection, you must adjust the cockpit ergonomically and prepare for driving.
The examiner checks the proper adjustment of the seat, mirrors, and head restraint, fastening seatbelts correctly, and ensuring all vehicle doors are shut.
Mirrors must provide an unobstructed view of the road behind and to the sides. The head restraint should align with the top of your head.
Do not rush through these adjustments. Proper posture directly impacts vehicle control and road observation.
What tasks are performed on the manoeuvring yard?
For Category B, the manoeuvring yard exercises consist of vehicle safety check and preparation, moving off and driving through the traffic lane forward and in reverse (driving along the curve / łuk), followed by starting on an incline (hill start).
Unlike certain other categories, parallel or bay parking is not done on the yard for Category B. Parking is tested exclusively in real road traffic.
What is the curved lane exercise (łuk)?
After starting the engine and switching on appropriate dipped headlights, you move off along the marked lane.
You must drive along the designated curved track first forward, and then in reverse.
During reverse driving, proper observation is evaluated: looking back through the rear window while monitoring side mirrors.
The vehicle must move smoothly without crossing or touching outer boundary lines, knocking down pylons or marker poles, and must stop cleanly in the designated final stop box.
Can you correct the curved lane exercise?
An initial mistake does not automatically fail the entire exam.
Regulations allow a second attempt for specific technical errors. However, if the task is failed a second time, the candidate is disqualified from proceeding to road driving.
Certain critical yard mistakes lead to immediate termination: crossing the outer line with a wheel, or knocking over/hitting a pylon or marker pole terminates the exam immediately.
How does the hill start work?
The second yard exercise is starting on an incline.
After stopping on the ramp, apply the parking brake. Then move off smoothly uphill, releasing the handbrake at the friction point.
During the hill start:
the car must not roll back more than 0.2 m (20 cm)
and
the engine must not stall.
These criteria are established strictly by the exam regulations.
Passing the yard exercises allows you to proceed to the road driving phase.
How do you exit the yard onto public roads?
Joining the traffic flow from the test centre is itself an assessed exam task.
Before moving off, look around thoroughly, check mirrors and blind spots, yield right-of-way where required by signs or general rules, and indicate properly.
From this point onward, driving takes place in open road traffic following the examiner’s directional instructions.
The examiner’s commands must comply with traffic regulations and cannot instruct you to break laws or endanger safety.
Do you need to memorize the exam routes?
No.
The exam is not a memory test of specific predetermined streets.
The examiner gives navigational commands, and your job is executing them in accordance with traffic conditions and road regulations.
If the examiner gives a turn instruction that cannot be performed safely or legally at that exact moment, do not violate traffic laws to comply.
Focus on dynamic situational driving rather than route memorization.
What tasks are tested in road traffic?
The road driving scope is comprehensive and adapts to the urban environment.
Evaluated tasks include: joining traffic flow, driving on single- and multi-lane carriageways, negotiating priority and equal intersections, signalized junctions and roundabouts, pedestrian crossings, parking manoeuvres, turnabouts (U-turns), lane changing, turning, passing oncoming traffic, avoiding stationary obstacles, and overtaking (where conditions permit). Braking to a stop at a designated point and eco-driving principles are also assessed.
Certain specialized infrastructure tasks (such as tunnels or railway level crossings) are assessed if available along feasible exam routes.
How does parking work during the Category B exam?
Parking is tested in real road traffic, not on the manoeuvring yard.
The examiner selects and indicates the parking location.
Depending on traffic and bay layouts, you may be asked to perform perpendicular, diagonal (angled), or parallel parking.
Regulations allow one trajectory correction during the parking manoeuvre. Parallel parking is performed in reverse between two vehicles if an appropriate spot exists.
When finished, the car must be parked legally, properly centered within the bay or aligned with the kerb without obstructing traffic.
How is the turnabout (zawracanie) tested?
One mandatory task is performing a turnabout on a two-way single carriageway.
The examiner designates the area.
You can utilize available infrastructure, such as driveways, gateways, or kerb recesses, requiring the use of reverse gear.
A turnabout may also be performed at an intersection or roundabout if road layouts permit.
Is eco-driving assessed on the exam?
Yes.
For Category B, the exam curriculum includes elements of energy-efficient driving.
In manual transmission vehicles, gear changing is evaluated. Regulations recommend shifting up between 1,800 and 2,600 RPM, and engaging the first four gears before reaching 50 km/h.
Engine braking during deceleration is also assessed.
However, safety and vigilant road scanning always take precedence over staring at the rev counter.
How long does the Category B practical exam take?
Regulations define the standard minimum driving time in road traffic as 40 minutes.
However, there is an important legal exception.
The examiner may conclude the road driving portion after just 25 minutes if all required tasks have been successfully completed and the overall result is positive. This rule was clarified in the regulation update effective June 30, 2025.
Therefore, returning to the centre after 25-30 minutes does not necessarily indicate a failure.
This duration does not include initial administrative checks and manoeuvring yard exercises.
What does the examiner pay attention to?
The examiner does not merely check if the car reaches its destination.
Key focus areas include execution of manoeuvres, behaviour towards pedestrians and cyclists, hazard recognition, defensive driving reactions, smooth vehicle handling, and overall road safety.
Always perform full mirror and blind spot checks before indicating, moving off, changing lanes, turning, or reversing.
Does the examiner inform you of mistakes?
Yes.
If an exam task is performed incorrectly, the examiner is legally required to inform the candidate, specifying which task was failed.
A single minor mistake does not mean instant failure.
In the road driving portion, an exam results in a negative outcome if the exact same exam task is performed incorrectly twice.
However, certain critical safety violations result in immediate failure or exam termination on the first occurrence.
When can an exam be terminated immediately?
Safety always supersedes completing all tasks.
If the candidate’s actions pose a direct threat to the life or health of road users, the examiner is obligated to terminate the exam immediately.
Immediate failure grounds include: failing to yield right-of-way, running a red light or ignoring a STOP sign, exceeding the speed limit by more than 20 km/h, dangerous behaviour at pedestrian crossings, unsafe overtaking, or causing an imminent collision hazard requiring examiner intervention.
Does examiner dual-control intervention mean failure?
If the examiner is forced to intervene on the dual-control pedals or steering wheel to prevent an immediate collision or danger, the exam almost invariably results in a negative outcome.
Focus on why the intervention was necessary: when intervention prevents an accident, the driving exam cannot continue.
What mistakes most frequently cause exam failure?
Common problem areas include:
- Right-of-way violations — especially at unmarked junctions, lane merges, and roundabout entries/exits,
- Pedestrians and cyclists — failing to yield at zebra crossings or when turning into side streets across cycle paths,
- STOP signs and signals — rolling stops or attempting to beat amber lights,
- Blind spot and mirror checks — omitting head checks when changing lanes or pulling out,
- Lane positioning — taking incorrect lanes before multi-lane intersections,
- Speed management — driving too fast for conditions or exceeding posted limits,
- Parking and turnabouts — hitting kerbs forcefully or refusing to use the allowed correction attempt,
- Yard curved lane (łuk) — touching lines or striking marker pylons,
- Hill start — rolling back more than 20 cm or stalling repeatedly,
- Examiner instructions — rushing to execute commands dangerously instead of continuing safely if a turn was missed.
Does stalling the engine mean you fail?
Not always.
A single engine stall during road driving does not automatically fail the exam, provided it does not create a hazardous traffic situation.
However, during the hill start on the manoeuvring yard, stalling the engine is an explicit failure criterion for that task.
If the car stalls in traffic, remain calm, secure the vehicle, restart the engine properly, and proceed safely.
Can you ask the examiner to repeat an instruction?
Yes. If you did not hear or understand a directional command, it is far safer to politely ask for clarification than to make an erratic, impulsive manoeuvre.
Examiners give navigational directions; they cannot advise you on lane selection or priority rules, as that constitutes your assessed driving competence.
Can you take a wrong turn and still pass?
Yes. Taking a wrong turn is not a traffic violation.
If you realize too late that you were supposed to turn, but cannot do so safely and legally, continue straight ahead following the highway code.
The examiner will simply give you a new route instruction.
Never swerve across multiple lanes or make an illegal sudden turn to catch a missed command.
Is the practical driving exam recorded?
Yes.
All Category B state practical examinations are audio and video recorded by onboard camera systems in accordance with statutory regulations.
Recordings document the exam and serve as objective evidence in the event of an appeal or procedural dispute.
What happens when the exam finishes?
Upon returning to the test centre, the examiner announces your result.
If the result is negative, the examiner must review your performance and explain the specific reasons for failure. You receive a printed exam report (arkusz przebiegu egzaminu) or an electronic equivalent.
The result is entered into the national database to update your Driver Candidate Profile (PKK).
What to do after passing the practical exam?
Passing the practical exam concludes all state testing requirements for Category B.
WORD automatically transmits your passing record electronically to your local municipal office (Wydział Komunikacji).
You can drive immediately once your temporary digital driving licence (tymczasowe prawo jazdy) is generated in the mObywatel app, while your physical card is manufactured.
The post-exam administrative steps and licence collection process are detailed in Step 7 of our guide.
What to do if you fail the practical exam?
A failed practical exam does not require repeating theory or re-enrolling in an entire driving course.
You simply book another practical exam date at WORD and pay the standard retake fee.
Review your exam failure report thoroughly. If mistakes were concentrated in specific manoeuvres (e.g. parking, roundabouts, or blind spot checks), book a few extra driving lessons with your OSK instructor to correct those habits before your next attempt.
How to best prepare for the practical exam?
Do not fixate exclusively on known exam routes.
You should feel comfortable driving down unfamiliar streets with confidence.
In your final course hours, request full mock exam simulations where your instructor gives only formal directions without hints. Practice vigilant observation, scanning crossings early, checking blind spots, and staying composed under pressure.
